Flanders Make is an applied research organisation focused on innovation in the manufacturing industry. Its role sits between universities and companies: turning research into practical, industrial use cases that manufacturers can apply in the real world.
Manufacturing challenges
Manufacturing companies face challenges across multiple domains. These include production, quality, logistics, and maintenance. To address these challenges, Flanders Make develops concrete use cases that reflect real industrial needs.
To support this work, Flanders Make partnered with Codit to build a cloud platform on Microsoft Azure. The goal of this platform is to enable teams to build and deploy applications and use cases in a way that is secure, efficient, and scalable.
Cloud foundation
At the core of the platform is a cloud foundation known as a landing zone. While building a cloud application itself is relatively straightforward, building a secure cloud application is much more complex. For Flanders Make, security is critical, because their work generates intellectual property.
Together with Codit, security was built into the platform from the start. This was done by automating the creation of landing zones, workspaces, and applications, ensuring that security is not an afterthought but an integral part of every deployment.
In addition to security, the platform was designed to improve efficiency. Researchers at Flanders Make need to focus on research, not on the technical effort of building and maintaining applications. By automating large parts of the development and deployment process, the platform allows applications to be created much faster.
As a result, researchers can now build an application in one or two months, instead of a year or even a year and a half.
Flexible solutions
One of the use cases built on the platform is Infraflex, a robotised flexible assembly cell. Manufacturing companies increasingly need to deliver customised products while maintaining the cost level of mass production. To achieve this, production lines must become far more flexible.
Infraflex is one example of how this flexibility can be achieved, using a modular setup with robotic components. Software plays a key role in such solutions. To ensure software quality, Flanders Make and Codit set up cloud‑based build pipelines that automatically and consistently build the software.
By standardising and automating this process, software quality is safeguarded and development becomes simpler and more reliable.
Flanders Make considers itself a frontrunner in this approach. For the wider industry to follow, companies will need to take a similar path: working with competent partners and ensuring that automation, security, and efficiency are in place when building cloud applications.
