To celebrate the day dedicated to education worldwide, we spoke with Michael Morozov, who started his Codit journey as a DevSecOps intern, and Yarno Krikilion, our current HR intern, to hear about their experiences:
How would you describe the company culture and the support you received during your time here?
Michael: Already during my interview, I could feel that Codit has an open, welcoming, and nurturing culture. Honestly, it was one of the nicest interviews I have ever done. Marlies took the time to explain what Codit does and how it works. She asked a lot of questions to test the waters and to see if it would be a good fit. But, most importantly, she took the time to listen to my story and who I was as a person. This was a stark contrast to all the other internship interviews I have done, and I’m very glad they wanted me to join the team. Despite the fact that I was researching DevSecOps alone, I never felt alone. My mentor always had my back and made sure I knew I could always ask questions. I could also exchange ideas with a colleague from Malta, and the Lead Architect regularly checked in with the necessary feedback.
Even now as a full-time employee, I frequently get asked if I’m okay and if I have any questions. This is what makes the difference in my opinion. An environment like this is ideal for learning, growing, and evolving, but only if you ask the right questions at the right time.
Yarno: I agree with Michael that even during the first interview, you can truly sense what Codit is like as a company. I had already attended a few interviews while searching for an internship and had more lined up, but I knew that if Codit offered me a position on the spot, I would accept it without hesitation.
From the very first day of my internship, I felt genuinely welcomed by everyone, which set a positive tone for the entire experience. I was surprised that Yashfeen, our Managing Director, took the time to speak with the new starters to get to know us personally, but this gesture demonstrated that everyone at Codit is approachable, regardless of their position in the company.
In terms of support, I am very glad I chose for Codit. I have the freedom to explore and make mistakes as part of my learning process. Whenever I am uncertain about something, I can always rely on my team for guidance and support. Additionally, I have been given opportunities to learn about topics beyond the scope of my internship and to participate in events as if I were a Codit employee. I currently feel like I am really part of the HR team, where my opinions are equally valued as those of other team members.
What was the most valuable lesson or skill you gained during your internship?
Michael: Getting lost and drowning in an ocean of information is normal, especially if you’re just starting out. Asking for help at the right time is what keeps you from drowning. Apart from all the technical knowledge I gained, this was the number one lesson I took away from my internship. The ability to ask questions and to make mistakes is also a pretty good indicator that the company you work for wants you to grow.
Yarno: This internship was my first real work experience at this level, and I learned many practical HR skills that you can only acquire on the job. Beyond HR, I gained insights into how a company operates and developed general work-life skills.
I also achieved skills I hadn’t anticipated. As an introverted person, I initially doubted my ability to conduct interviews effectively. However, with the support of my mentors, Marlies and Anne, and the continuous opportunities to hone my skills, I improved beyond my expectations. Overcoming my limitations with their support was incredibly satisfying.
One of the most important lessons I learned is the value of working in an environment where you can freely ask for support and have opportunities to challenge yourself and grow. And as others have supported me, I believe it is its important that in time I support others in return.
